5 Days Off

5 Days Off

Inspired by Belgium's 10 Days Off, Amsterdam's 5 Days Off Festival is the first multi-day indoor dance event in the Netherlands. 5 Days Off attracts more than twenty thousand visitors annually and provides the capital with five days of top-line clubbing, live shows and performances. Since 2001, the programme has featured a diverse mix of acknowledged names and up-and-coming talent from the Netherlands and abroad. After a few hours sleep, set the alarm and head for the festival's art programme in De Balie — a diverse offering that gives a platform to art disciplines such as film, photography, media art, graphic design, fashion, and lifestyle.

Amsterdam Gay Pride

Amsterdam Gay Pride

It's little wonder that Europe's most progressive city hosts one of the world's most eagerly anticipated pride celebrations. For nine days each summer, Amsterdam Gay Pride permeates Amsterdam's bars and clubs with celebrations building to a crescendo of colour on the water for the famous Canal Parade on Saturday. Eighty pre-selected floating floats take to the city's waterways in a gay parade like no other. Smaller craft line the sides of the canal, whilst thousands of spectators take up every vantage to watch the water-based party pass.

Amsterdam Halloween Parade and Party

Amsterdam Halloween Parade and Party

Freaks take over the streets during Amsterdam's annual Halloween Parade and Party. Come All Hallows' Eve or Day of the Dead, a disfigured band of the undead, ghosts, goblins, pirates, vampires and zombies slash a swathe through Amsterdam, stopping only to suck the blood of spectators. Plot your plan of attack or download the parade route from the parade's website. For survivors, there's an after-party in the downright spooky, Westerpark. Tickets sell out early, so be prepared to sell your soul to get your hands on some. Either that, or plan ahead a little.

Amsterdam King's Day

Amsterdam King's Day

Amsterdam's streets, squares and canals come to life in a sea of orange — the colour of the Dutch Royal family — each 27 April for King's Day, or Koningsdag in the local lingo. Partying up a storm with friends is the royal order of the day (and the night before) as live music, DJs and spontaneous parties pervade the city's public spaces. Wearing orange is more than preferable, it's almost mandatory. If that ain't enough, the whole city becomes a huge, car boot sale for the day whilst street trading rules are relaxed.

Imagine Film Festival

Imagine Film Festival

It's been near enough to three decades since the first 'Weekend of Terror', laid the foundations for the current Imagine Film Festival. In those early days, the WoT was as much a meeting place for film fans who could feast on Italian zombie flicks to the point of collapse, as for those who were in unanimous agreement that the work of David Cronenberg deserved to be taken seriously. Since that first Weekend of Terror, the 'fantastic' offering has become a great deal more diverse, and the public's taste has likewise become a little more sophisticated. Today, Imagine presents in the region of 50 feature films and 25 shorts, a masterclass, a symposium and lots of Q&A's with directors, writers and actors. 'The Night of Terror', keeps the memory of the WoT alive with a midnight marathon of four horror films, for an audience of about 500 in Amsterdam's extravagant art deco Tuschinski theatre.
