Air Guitar World Championships

No guitar, never mind, take matters into your own hands — literally — at the Air Guitar World Championships. For four days each August rockers and metal-heads head to Oulu in Finland — the home of air guitar — with nary an instrument in sight. They strum, strut, thrust and pout to a crowd of enthusiastic onlookers in the hope of being crowned Air Guitar World Champion. Balls of Fire

Balls of Fire

Great balls of fire! Every August 31st in the El Salvador city of Nejapa, youths with painted faces take to the street to hurl fireballs at each other in a scene that the casual passer-by could be forgiven for interpreting as the early stages of a riot. But those in the know will tell you the mayhem at hand is a ritual, Balls of Fire (or Bolas de Fuego in local lingo), in honour of a violent volcanic eruption that took place in 1917. Personally I'd prefer to take part in an ironic water fight, but that's just me.

Barthelmarkt

Barthelmarkt

Don the dirndl or pop on the leather shorts and make your way to Manching near Ingolstadt for four days of beer-based fun. Though first made mention of in 1354, the roots of Barthelmarkt can be traced back to the 1st century BC when a cattle market was established in the district by the Romans. Today Barthelmarkt is a little more about beer than bovines, although there's still horse racing on the Saturday and a cattle market on the Monday. Just like it's Oktoberfest cousin, there's the ubiquitous behemoth beer tents and plenty of German oompah music, pretzels and general Bavarian revelry.

Burning Man

Burning Man

From where there was nothing, Burning Man emerges in a sandstorm of futuristic surrealism for eight days each August. Burning Man's not a festival, that's way too restrictive as a definition, rather it's a happening dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. To many, Burning Man represents an artistic utopia, a successful study of creative co-existence. It's an escape where participants are free to express themselves almost without bounds. To shed their societal skin and be whoever it is they want to be. To others, its simply the greatest show on earth, an around-the-clock party with a booming bass-line and a cast of crazy characters. Imagine the Star Wars Cantina scene re-written by Hunter S. Thompson on a binge and directed by Dali and you're coming close. At its heart, Burning Man is a happening organised by participants for participants that follows ten core principles — radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy. Whatever you make of it, it can't be argued that the Burning Man Project is brilliantly unique. Long may it burn!

Cowes Week

Cowes Week

When the fickle British weather's on song and the breeze is light but consistent, there ain't no place like Cowes on the Isle of Wight come early August. Each year Cowes plays host to the longest-running sailing regatta in the world, Cowes Week. Held along the stretch of ocean between the English mainland and the Isle of Wight known as the Solent — a stretch of sea often made ticklish for yachtsmen and women by strong double tides. A typical Cowes Week now has over 35 starts a day for classes of cruiser-racers, one designs and keelboats; in which over a thousand boats and 8,500 competitors will take part. No yacht? No matter! Most of the 50,000+ in attendance wouldn't know a Carrick Bend from a Double Granny. It's the party on shore that they're there to see. So if you find yourself in the British Isles come late summer why not head down to Cowes on the Isle of Wight and join the strawberries and Pimms set as they talk tactics and get tanked. Bon Voyage!

Festa Major de Gracia

Festa Major de Gracia

Barcelona's Gracia district has a bit of a bohemian reputation. Things hang a little looser in Gracia. It has vibrant squares, a bustling bar and cafe scene and a thriving art scene — perhaps part-inspired by Gaudi's Parc Guell, which also calls the barrio home. And each August it has Festa Major. During la festa, Gracia really turns on it's eclectic charm as individual streets vie for the coveted best decorated street award. Festa Major is big news in Barcelona and competition to outdo the neighbouring street is fierce. Grab a glass of Cava and get lost amidst the colourful Gaudi inspired installations and the two story high paper-mache models. Be entertained by the myriad street performers or drawn by the competing rhythms of a hundred street musicians. In the squares keep an eye up for the spectacular castelleres, the Catalan human towers, that can reach staggering heights. More than a million revellers descend upon the Basque city of Bayonne for five days each August for the eagerly awaited, Fêtes de Bayonne. The renowned Basque hospitality and party spirit is evident in events ranging from tamborradas to the Bell Pepper Omelette World Championship. La Tomatina

La Tomatina

On the last Wednesday of August each year thousands of revellers converge on the small Spanish town of Buñol to pick a fight. What began in 1944 as a simple tomato fight between a group of friends in the town's main square — the Plaza del Pueblo — has turned into arguably the worlds largest food fight. The festivities begin in the week leading up to La Tomatina with a celebration of the towns' Patron Saint. Fireworks light the heavy summer sky while street parties warm up at ground level. Rose wine flows and the hefty scent of wood fired paella fills the air. Music plays and people dance. Come Wednesday and the Town Square is awash with travellers and locals alike. Seasoned veterans mix with wide eyed first timers as more rose wine is passed around and the excitement level grows. At around about noon, a number of trucks carrying the edible red grenades rumble their way into the main Town Square to the chant of tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes from the now drunken crowd. Chivalry slinks out of town for a while as everyone becomes fair game. Red missiles are a dime a dozen, no-one escapes. The aftermath looks a little like a latter scene in Carrie. The ground, a fantastic base for the worlds largest Bolognese sauce. As exhausted combatants trudge their way towards temporary showers put in place for the event, the cleanup begins in earnest. And within hours, the Plaza del Pueblo magically returns to its former glory.

Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival

For a little over 360 days a year the trendy West London suburb of Notting Hill is a tranquil leafy locale ruled by the latte and boutique beer set. But all that changes on the August bank holiday weekend as the Notting Hill Carnival — one of Europe's largest street parties — swings and sways its way into W11. The sharp blast from ten thousand whistles and the heavy thud of hardcore bass can be heard from as far away as Hyde Park. As well as a couple of larger stages — featuring international headline acts — and a plethora of smaller ones, impromptu performers roam the streets while many locals clear the floorboards at home and pump up the volume to cater for friends or those from the outside masses who like what they hear. Even the food sellers join in the aural assault, and there's certainly enough of them. Blackened corn on the cob is the festival staple with jerk chicken a delicious, close run second. It's usually the spectacle, energy and colour of Monday's festival parade that most visitors to Notting Hill Carnival are there to see. Dozens of floats ranging in size from the modest to the mobile party make there way along Ladbroke and Westbourne Groves. Calypso tunes blast out from speakers the size of small sedans. Colourful costumed dancers strut their stuff in time to their own floats beat. Swaying onlookers crowd ten and fifteen deep, whistles blowing and dancing in the streets.
