Donauinselfest

Donauinselfest

Vienna's Donauinselfest looks at the word massive and laughs at it. It's a hearty chuckle. Colossal gets a sneer and huge doesn't even warrant a response. Each year, a 6.5 kilometre section of Donauinsel (a man-made island strip smack bang in the middle of the Danube) between the Reichsbrücke and the Nordbrücke, attracts more than three million revellers for a three day blowout like no other. On her 11 stages music ranges from metal to Mozart but it's often aimed more at the predominantly Austrian audience than any international visitors. From street theatre to circus to Latin dance and from sporting competitions to adrenaline attractions, away from the stages there's a little something for everyone. All concerts are free but if you're planning a visit, start thinking about accommodation early. Vienna's a tourist hotspot with accommodation options galore but during Donauinselfest all bets are off.
