America's Cup

America's Cup

The battle for the Auld Mug has been raging since 1870 but it wasn't until the 25th edition of the America's Cup in Newport, RI in 1983 that the Aussies nabbed it from the Yanks and in the process ended over one hundred years of American domination. Today the event's as much about high-tech gadgetry and bits 'n' bobs as it is about tactics but it still makes a wonderful spectacle for the few lucky ones who can get near enough to view the action up-close. But fear not landlubbers, not all of the action is on the water. There's plenty of partying that takes place back at the docks.

BottleRock Napa Valley

BottleRock Napa Valley

Pairing the world's largest rock and indie headliners with the region's finest wines ensures BottleRock Napa Valley's tickets sell out fast. Following its debut in 2013, BottleRock's reputation as a world-class — yet almost intimate — music slash wine festival has begun to age superbly. With 120,000 visitors perhaps intimate is a push, but BottleRock certainly exploits its picture-postcard surrounds to create an intensely relaxed vibe. Set in the sublime Napa Valley, the fests five stages — along with the VIP Acoustic Stage, and BottleRock Culinary Stage — attract international acts of the calibre of the Foo Fighters, Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Snoop Dogg, Muse and The Killers. And where's their fine wine, good food is sure to follow, with many of the region's restaurateurs and food producers on hand to provide festival sustenance between rounds of Chardonnay.

Comic-Con International

Comic-Con International

When a group of comic, movie, and science fiction buffs banded together to test the viability of a comic convention way back in 1970, they probably had little idea of the genie they'd just uncorked. That first single-day event — dubbed San Diego's Golden State Comic-Minicon — attracted in the region of 100 loyal fans. Today's Comic-Con International in San Diego is a multi-headed behemoth that pulls dedicated, often costumed crowds in excess of 100,000 over its four day outing each July. The event fills the substantial San Diego Convention Center with ease, to the point where satellite locations having popped up around downtown San Diego in recent years to sate the thirst of the Comic-Con faithful. Comic-Con features not only comics but all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; anime and film screenings (including an independent film festival); games; the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards — the Oscars of the comics industry — a masquerade costume competition with prizes and trophies; an autograph area; an art show; and portfolio reviews, that pair aspiring artists with major publishers. Comic-Con sells out quick. I'm talking the Flash type quick! So be prepared to battle the forces of evil to get your hands on a ticket.
