What began as a little friendly patriotic-based rivalry between friends has grown to become a competitive eating behemoth, attracting more than a million television viewers across the country, along with a selection of the world's finest power eaters. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) — yes, there is such a thing — has sanctioned the event since 1997. So today, only entrants currently under contract by the IFOCE can compete in the event. Those fortunate few have ten minutes to shovel down as many hot dogs and hot dog buns as their digestive tracts can handle. Provided they stay down, the contestant who consumes the most hot dogs is declared the winner. In 2013 Joey Chestnut consumed 69 of those tasty medleys of meat to claim the men's record, whist a year earlier Sonya Thomas put away 45 to set the bar in the women's event. Pepto-Bismol anyone?

Zigante Truffle Days

For true foodies, there's nothing quite like the delicate taste of truffles. Coming to Croatia's Northern Cape is like entering paradise. While three black varieties of truffles are harvested here year round, every fall some 3,000 visitors descend upon the region to seek the rarified white truffle. Many of those who arrive are hoping to uncover the world's largest white truffle — as Giancarlo Zigante did near the town of Buje on 2 November, 1999. Visitors head to the region's Hotel Lone and Hotel Monte Mulini for truffle-centered programs like guided hunting excursions into the Motovun woods and private tastings at the region's elegant and aptly named, Zigante restaurant. The month-long festival comes to a peak at Subotina, an event that ushers in the past to the town of Buzet. On that day, the aromas and sounds of tradition fill the air, as citizens, dressed in their original folk costumes from the late 19th century, take to the streets. Buzet kicks off the truffle hunt season with the preparation of a humungous 2,000 egg frittata topped with shavings of the divine tubers.
