Montreux Jazz Festival

Montreux Jazz Festival

Second in size only to Montreal's monster jazz offering, the Montreux Jazz Festival has been entertaining jazz aficionados and music lovers in general with the biggest names in the industry since 1967. Originally held at the waterfront Montreux Casino — before it famously burnt down during Frank Zappa's set during the 1971 edition of the festival which was later referenced in Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple — today, Montreux Jazz takes place in a number of venues including the Montreux Musique and Convention Centre. Early performers read like a who's who of the recent history of jazz. From Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett to Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Since the 1970's through today the scope of the festival has opened allowing blues, soul and rock artists a place on the card but there's usually more than enough jazz to keep the die-hards coming back. Montreux Jazz Festival does it thing on the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva for two weeks each July. Book early, accommodation fills fast.
