Avignon Festival

Avignon Festival

During the peak summer month of July, the entire city of Avignon turns into one giant vibrant theatre during the annual Festival d'Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar during France's heady post-war years, today the festival is divided into two very distinct strands, the main festival — the In and the fringe festival — the Off. The main festival features between 35 and 40 different shows, a diverse mix of theatre, dance, comedy, film and mime — French and non-French — totalling about 300 performances in all. Many of them are world or French premieres. On the Fringe or Off side of things, more than 1,000 companies offer up their blend of experimental theatre, comedy and alternative music and dance wherever they can, from churches to schools, to parks and street corners. It all makes for a great time to visit Avignon.

Balaton Sound

Balaton Sound

Co-created by the organisers of Hungary's monster Sziget Festival, Balaton Sound packs the pedigree to compete comfortably for the crown of Europe's biggest summer dance festival. An around-the-clock juggernaut of electronica, Balaton attracts headliners of the calibre of Calvin Harris, Fatboy Slim, Kraftwerk and Massive Attack for four-days of thumping beats and dance anthems across a bewildering number of stages. Renowned for its creature comforts and chill out zones — along with its picturesque setting on the shore of Central Europe's largest lake — Balaton serves up a slice of luxury absent from the vast majority of summer festivals of its size. Pitch a tent and camp adjacent to the festival grounds or for an extra fee enjoy the lap of Lake Balaton from your plastic home away from home. There are more luxurious options too if the budget allows. Wi-fi zones, phone charging points, lockers, showers and even an on-site drug-store for those forgotten essentials all add to Balaton's rep'. Christopher Street Day

Christopher Street Day

Paying tribute to trailblazers of the LGBT cause, Berlin's Christopher Street Day is named (and held in memory of) the first substantial uprising of homosexuals against police assaults in Greenwich Village (New York) on 27 June, 1969. The riots on that day — dubbed the Stonewall Riots — took place in a bar called the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. In Germany, Christopher Street Day was first celebrated in Berlin in 1979 and since then has grown to become known as one of Europe's largest Pride celebrations. Half a million revellers dance up a storm during the colourful street parade which kicks off at the corner of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimstaler Straße and ends at Brandenburg Gate. The after-parade party continues through the night at many of Berlin's bars and clubs.

Darwin Beer Can Regatta

Darwin Beer Can Regatta

Combine a population of just over a hundred thousand with year round temperatures that top 30 degrees Celsius and the unquestionable Australian zeal for a soothing lager and the result is one hell of a lot of empty aluminium beer cans. I'm talking Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory and those empty beer cans? Well they're the raw materials on which one of the world's most bizarre events is based. Since 1974 the Combined Lions Clubs of Darwin have promoted Darwin's Beer Can Regatta held annually on Mindil Beach. The event pits arguably the world's finest beer can boat builders against each other in a battle of seaworthiness — a very loosely-bandied term. Throw in plenty of festivities for the landlubbers — the Henley-on-Mindil bottom-less boat races along the beach, a thong (foot not under-wear) throwing competition, tug-of-wars and bathing beauty contests — and you got yourself one hell of a beach-party mate.

On the world map Guam is but a speck of utopia located roughly equidistance from the northern tip of Australian and the southern tip of Japan. It's a heady mix of Asian, Spanish and American influences, a tropical paradise in every sense of the definition, and a great place to spend a week or two. And if you've got a say as to when that week or two may be, why not make it during mid July and take in Guam's Liberation Day on the 21st. As a strategic piece of real estate in World War II they didn't come much more important than Guam. Japanese forces invaded and took control of Guam in 1941 and it wasn't until 1944 in the lead up to the final push on the Japanese that US forces re-took the largest island of the Micronesian archipelago. Each year in the week leading up to July 21st the locals of Guam celebrate their liberation from the Japanese with local carnivals, feasting and fireworks. The culmination of this week of celebrations comes on the 21st when locals take to the capital Hagatña for a parade featuring extravagant floats and costumed marchers and partying on well into the wee hours of the morn.

Wife Carrying World Championships

Wife Carrying World Championships

Like so many of the world's more bizarre events, wife carrying has it's origins buried deep in the bosom of an age old local tradition — in this case, the 19th century practice of wife stealing. Finnish men of the era were known to plunder the female populations of neighbouring local villages, taking what took their eye, caveman style. The motivation may have changed since then but the practice remains largely the same. To enter the modern day championships a wife is a necessity. Not necessarily yours. In fact any female over the age of 17 will do. To the cheers of thousands of assembled spectators, contestants — with wife on board — must negotiate a 253.5 metre course covering sand, grass and asphalt. To add a measure of difficulty to the event, two dry and two metre deep water based obstacles have been added to the mix. What for the winner? Well amongst other prizes, they get to take home their wife's weight in beer. Sobering thought that!
