Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Over nine days each fall, 750 hot air balloons of all shapes, sizes and disguises take to the blue above the lush Rio Grande Valley during the spectacular, Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Rise early for the spectacular Dawn Patrol, where pilots take off before sunrise and fly until it is light enough to access landing sites, and in the process, provide valuable intel for pilots to come. During the Mass Ascensions hundreds of balloons take off in two waves ushered into the air by launch directors known as zebras (due to the black and white striped uniforms they wear). A firm family favourite is the Special Shape Rodeo where balloons resembling all manner of things, from bees to cows to soft drink cans, fill the fall Albuquerque sky.

America's Cup

America's Cup

The battle for the Auld Mug has been raging since 1870 but it wasn't until the 25th edition of the America's Cup in Newport, RI in 1983 that the Aussies nabbed it from the Yanks and in the process ended over one hundred years of American domination. Today the event's as much about high-tech gadgetry and bits 'n' bobs as it is about tactics but it still makes a wonderful spectacle for the few lucky ones who can get near enough to view the action up-close. But fear not landlubbers, not all of the action is on the water. There's plenty of partying that takes place back at the docks.

Angola Prison Rodeo

Angola Prison Rodeo

If you find yourself at a loose end in Louisiana come April, it may sound strange but you could do worse than go to prison. Over a weekend in April and each Sunday in October the Louisiana State Penitentiary plays host to the Angola Prison Rodeo where the protagonists are the inmates and facing down a half tonne of beef is seen as a privilege. It's a chance for prisoners to cash in and get some face time with relatives and loved ones. Events range from barrel racing, to wild cow milking, to the bust out where six bulls with riders on board are released at once with the last man standing declared the winner. A little tip for nothing: anyone asks if you'd like to participate in a round of convict poker, run like hell! A little clarification perhaps: four inmates sit around a table in the middle of the arena, a bull is released and the last man left sitting is declared the winner. High stakes indeed.

Bald Eagle Gathering

Bald Eagle Gathering

An unexpected highlight of any visit to North America is to catch a glimpse of the region's iconic Bald Eagle. Whether sitting regally atop a tree surveying the ground for prey or in majestic full flight it's a memory that remains vivid for a long, long time. A long time that is until you visit Haines, Alaska for their annual Bald Eagle Festival where the mighty American symbol becomes as prevailant as the barnyard chicken. Each year between October and December anywhere between 3,000 and 5,000 of these magnificent creatures — and thousands of Golden Eagles to boot — descend upon the Chilkat River Flats in the 48,000 acre Alaksa Chilkat Bald Eagle Reserve below Klukwan for "the gathering". Why? The rich pickings of Coho and Chum Salmon which return annually to this aquatic hot spot to spawn. To coincide with "the gathering" each November the town of Haines puts on a show — the Bald Eagle Festival. Festival highlights include the release of many previously-injured, rehabilitated Eagles back to the wild, art exhibitions, naturalist-guided tours of the Bald Eagle Reserve and live bird presentations. All in all quite the spectacle and an ornithologists dream come true.

In Fayette County, West Virginia there's a bridge that spans the New River Gorge. It stands some 876 feet (almost 300 metres) above the water below and for 364 days a year it quietly goes about its task, allowing vehicular traffic to cross the imposing gorge below. Burning Man

Burning Man

From where there was nothing, Burning Man emerges in a sandstorm of futuristic surrealism for eight days each August. Burning Man's not a festival, that's way too restrictive as a definition, rather it's a happening dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. To many, Burning Man represents an artistic utopia, a successful study of creative co-existence. It's an escape where participants are free to express themselves almost without bounds. To shed their societal skin and be whoever it is they want to be. To others, its simply the greatest show on earth, an around-the-clock party with a booming bass-line and a cast of crazy characters. Imagine the Star Wars Cantina scene re-written by Hunter S. Thompson on a binge and directed by Dali and you're coming close. At its heart, Burning Man is a happening organised by participants for participants that follows ten core principles — radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy. Whatever you make of it, it can't be argued that the Burning Man Project is brilliantly unique. Long may it burn!

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead

On the night of November 1, Mexico's cemeteries come alive with prayers and song, as, in the glow of flickering candlelight, relatives make offerings of food, drink, toys and flowers at the gravesides of relatives passed. The celebration is known as the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). It's a fascinating fusion of ancient indigenous beliefs and Christian holy days which coincides with All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The first day is the Day of the Angels (Dia de los Angelitos), dedicated to children who have passed, whilst the second day remembers adult relatives. Children get excited weeks before El Dia de los Muertos as coffin- and skeleton-shaped sweets, special bread, candied pumpkin and papier mache skeleton puppets fill the shops and markets. Things really get going in Oaxaca on 31 October, when people create elaborate altars at home with offerings of favorite foods, tequila and cigars for dead relatives, along with an arch of brightly coloured flowers. Lively events take place in Oaxaca's main square, as well as in restaurants and many of the theatres throughout the city. People erect public altars with flower offerings. Shop owners join in the fun displaying papier mache and wax skeletons posed as macabre professionals at work or at play.

Giant Omelette Celebration

Think the name pretty much gives the game away here — take 5,000 eggs, 50 pounds of onions, 75 bell peppers, six and a half gallons of milk, 52 pounds of butter, three boxes of salt and two boxes of black pepper and mix together on a giant 12 foot skillet. The result: one helluva big omelette, my friend! Work up an apetite with a historic walk through historic downtown Abbeville or take in the art and craft show at Magdaline Square.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day has been celebrated each and every 2nd February since 1886 when the one, the only Punxsutawney Phil leaves the snug sanctuary of his burrow — at the intriguingly named Gobbler's Knob — to form his weather prediction for the remainder of winter. According to local legend, if Phil spies his shadow, the folk of Punxsutawney are in for six more weeks of winter. If there ain't no shadow, then it's an early spring. Phil's success rate? 100% of course! Nothing less is expected from a groundhog that is reputedly over 120 years old. Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from supping the "elixir of life" a secret recipe he imbibes every summer at the Groundhog Picnic that miraculously adds seven years to his life.

Mike the Headless Chicken Festival

Mike the Headless Chicken Festival

On the too weird scale it's hard to top the story of Mike the Headless Chicken. The year, 1945, the bird in question, a five and a half month old Wyandotte rooster who'd spent his days contentedly pecking through the dust of a Fruita, Colorado farmyard. On one fateful evening in September of that year, farmer Lloyd Olsen raised the axe and bought it down on the neck of Mike, as farmers are occasionally wont to do. But, and here's the twilight-zone-like twist, instead of running himself ragged and flopping over in a pile of poultry, Mike saw out the night. When farmer Lloyd went to gather Mike the following day, he found him sleeping with his head under his wing. Flabbergasted by Mike's overwhelming will to live, farmer Lloyd began feeding Mike grain and water via an eyedropper. And the rest is poultry folklore. In the 18 months that Mike lived as "The Headless Wonder Chicken", he grew from a mere 2.5 pounds to almost 8 pounds. Today, each and every May, people gather in the small town of Fruita, Colorado to pay homage to Mike, the most determined of fowl, during the annual Mike the Headless Chicken Festival. There's a car show, tons of great music and entertainment a chicken dance contest, plenty of food and craft vendors and a five kilometre, run like a headless chicken fun run. In an ironic twist — that probably wouldn't have been lost on Mike — the festival also features a chicken eating competition. Hmmm, food for thought that.
