Vienna's Donauinselfest looks at the word massive and laughs at it. It's a hearty chuckle. Colossal gets a sneer and huge doesn't even warrant a response. Isle of Wight Festival

Isle of Wight Festival

The Isle of Wight Festival has a distant history as infamous and colourful as any music festival still doing the rounds. Originally held for the first time in 1968, the festival ran for three years before being banned in 1971 when Parliament passed the Isle of Wight Act — legislation forbidding more than 5,000 people to gather on the Isle without procuring a special license. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival attracted in excess of 600,000 people to the island for an legendary lineup that included Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Moody Blues, The Who, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. I mean...wow! After a three decade hiatus, it wasn't until 2002 the festival was revived. Whilst today's event may lack a little of the Woodstock era's counter-culture vibe that it had back in the day, it certainly still has no problems in drawing a crowd and some of indie, rock and pop's heavyweights. St. Jerome's Laneway Festival (Singapore)

St. Jerome's Laneway Festival (Singapore)

St. Jerome's Laneway Festival began life as a Sunday session at the now defunct St. Jerome's bar in Melbourne's Caledonian Lane. Over time, the sessions evolved to the point where the adjacent laneway was cleared, crowds spilled onto the street and a festival institution was born. Today, St. Jerome's Laneway Festivals take place in cities across Australia, across the Tasman and as far afield as Singapore and Detroit. They all follow the same formula, and I quote: St. Jerome's Laneway Festival is about leading new and revered seminal music. The festival has always been interested in finding what's fresh and bringing it to unique settings and surrounds to be appreciated by music lovers. Singapore's Laneway offering takes place in the spacious pastures of The Meadow, Gardens By The Bay, which is as idyllic as the name conveys. The magical site is a beauty, with plenty of space to watch bands and explore the food and drink kiosks and other fun activities around the festival.

Truck Festival

Truck Festival

Well into its second decade, Oxfordshire's Truck is one of the most respected events on the UK festival circuit. Having welcomed some of the biggest names in music to the stage — often before they were huge — along with a load of local talent, it also carries a reputation as the country's most warped village fete. Spanking toilets and that fact revellers can bring along their own food and drink, certainly help mount a compelling case for a two-day trip to Oxfordshire this July.

V Festival

V Festival

A staple of the UK summer music festival calendar, the V Festival has been held across two comely stately parks for one epic cross-country weekend of live music since 1996. Reputedly it was Pulp's front man, Jarvis Cocker's idea to play an outdoor venue in the north and another in the south over the same weekend and V was born. Today, the V Festival takes place simultaneously at Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in South Staffordshire, with world-class indie, rock, pop, r 'n' b and hip-hop acts taking to the stage at one venue on the Saturday and the other on the Sunday.

Voodoo Music Experience

Voodoo Music Experience

At New Orlean's Voodoo Music Experience they do do that voodoo that they do so well. Over three days around about Halloween each year, New Orleans historic City Park, with its lush lagoons, bayous and some of the spookiest looking mature oak trees this side of the Mississippi, puts on a musical celebration second only in size in these parts to the iconic, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Six unique performance areas punctuated with interactive art play host to some of music's biggest names along with a bunch of perennial local Louisiana favourites. Got a hankering for a Po-Boy, some Gumbo or Jambalaya that you just can't shake? Fuel up on some New Orleans staples before diving back into the musical milieu. For the fat of wallet there's some extravagant high end camping and backstage ticket packages.

Wacken Open Air

Wacken Open Air

The village of Wacken may be but a dot on the map of the Northern German region of Schleswig-Holstein but ask any metal-head from Reykjavik to Christchurch and they'll pinpoint that sucker for you. Renowned for its connected vibe, for attracting metal-heads from all over the world and for the buy-in from all 2,000 Wacken locals, W:O:A's reputation as metal's must-attend fest is enhanced year on year. Wacken sells out for the following year within 48 hours of the curtain coming down on the closing act from this year — a testament to that reputation. So book mega-early, pack your black and make your way to Wacken next August for the metal blowout of a lifetime.

Wilderness Festival

Wilderness Festival

Oxfordshire's Wilderness Festival is fast gaining a reputation as one of the finest boutique fests in the UK. Add a top shelf lineup of international acts (despite its size) and a plethora of posh nosh, featuring lots of organic and ethically sourced produce and you're three from three. There's an open-air spa with hot tubs, a sauna and a lake for those who fancy and a dip and even the loos are step up from the usual.
