Mud Slinging Festival

Many of Japan's more renowned cultural festivals involve grown men dressed in nothing more than loincloths (fundoshi in the local lingo) doing strange things to each other. In that respect, the Dairokuten-no-Hadaka Matsuri or Mud Slinging Festival does not disappoint. Each February, participants gather in Yotsukaido in the Chiba Prefecture to strip down, get knee deep in filthy frigid water, then wrestle and fling what they find at their feet at each other. Like so many of the world's weirder events, the Dairokuten-no-Hadaka Matsuri is billed as a spiritual ritual carried out to ensure a healthy harvest.
